For this activity, you will need a mobile device (SmartPhone, tablet, etc.) or a computer connected to the Internet.
Procedure
Before the activity
Read the section on Mobile Literacy and watch the videos in that section, particularly Professor Glenn Stockwell’s presentation on Mobile Learning for Language Learning.
During the activity
The activity consists in becoming acquainted with the tools and applications available on mobile devices and deciding how best to use them for FL teaching and learning.
- Make a list of the tools on your mobile device that you think may be used for language learning. A possible list may consist of: camera and video camera, recording device, etc.
- Make a list of the apps on your device that you think may be used for language learning (some useful applications may be Kahoot, Socrative, EdPuzzle, Google Maps, online dictionaries, etc.)
- Pick one tool or one application you find interesting to work with. Explore its use and think of possible ways it could be used for a FL activity. Would you use it for pull learning (to seek information) or for push learning (to provide students with information)?
- How would you design the activity? Training your students may be crucial to the success of the activity. How much space would you give to technical, strategic and pedagogical training of your students?
- Design a FL activity with the tool or application chosen.
