Overview: Intercultural Communication

This section introduces the topic of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) for language learning.  Changes in how we communicate, such as the collaborative spaces we use online, using technologies such as social media, collaborative technologies, blogs, and discussion boards, have shifted the kinds of skills and social practices you must develop in order to integrate into our globalised society.

These new forms of communication support globalised, online spaces where participants from varying language and cultural backgrounds can interact with one another.  Language learners can create independent learning opportunities offered in these new contexts, using online spaces to create new multilingual language learning environments.

Preparing for ICC:  This section takes an in-depth look at ICC for language learning.  You will have the opportunity to practise your language skills during and following your intercultural exchange.  Using online spaces to facilitate and apply language skills, language learners can share discoveries of their mobility programme, and build a portfolio or diary of their experiences.

Engaging in ICC:  Participation in these spaces offers language learners an opportunity to showcase evidence of consolidated learning and language practice, intercultural communicative competence (ICC), and digital literacies.

Reflecting on ICC:  Going forward, these online spaces can be maintained and used for purposes such as reflecting on your own ICC, as well as building a professional portfolio of achievements for postgraduate opportunities.
