Applying listening and viewing strategies

Listening and viewing in a foreign language are complex skills that can be addressed and taught in the language class. There are some strategies that can be employed to enhance comprehension and these strategies can be used before, during and after the actual listening/viewing activity. The following exercise is an example of how you can apply some of these strategies.

You can review Listening and viewing strategies before proceeding with this activity or explore the navigation panel to view more activities in this category.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this task students will be able to:
  • improve their listening skills
  • demonstrate an understanding of the video and its details
  • reflect on useful listening & viewing strategies

Procedure

Search for a video clip that is appropriate for your students language level, in an area of interest, for example, ‘studying in your target language country’ (an example is provided in the language tab at the end of the page)

Before the activity

  • Plenary session: tell your students they are going to watch a video and tell them the title of the video.
    • Ask students to discuss what they think the video is about.
  • Watch the video without sound. Ask the students about the video:
    • What is happening?
    • Can they identify places and objects in the video?
    • Ask students to discuss what they think the audio will say? (this can be done in groups or pairs).
  • Ask students to reflect on these two pre-viewing activities/strategies.

Activity

This activity can be done online or in class. Students can do this activity on their own or in pairs.

  • Tell students to watch the video with the sound and compare their previous guess with the actual contents of the video.
  • Ask students to complete the comprehension exercises if available, or provide your own.

After the activity – final reflection

Ask students to:

Reflect on what they learnt during this activity in terms of:

  • Listening and viewing skills & strategies
  • Cultural and social contents of the video
  • Vocabulary/Language

Reflect on these two pre-viewing activities/strategies. Do they think they helped them for a better understanding of the video? How?

Reflect on the comprehension exercises. Do they think the exercises helped for a better understanding of the video? How?

Suggestions for assessment

  • Ask students to use the classroom blog and answer the questions in the Final Reflection.
  • Ask students to use the classroom blog and complete a list of words or expressions that they learnt from the video, then present examples of situations in which you could use them.
