Active participation in town twinning activities

Ahead of your mobility trip, investigate the existence of a twinning partnership between your home town/city and one from the country you intent to visit.

Objectives:

By the end of this activity, you will have developed:

1- Transferable skills such as search engine and social media use, effective interpersonal communication and event logistics.

2- Knowledge on cultural similarities and differences between two countries or regions by involving the wider community in your mobility trip.

3- A (potentially far-reaching) socio-cultural dimension to your mobility trip including a high level of inter-cultural competence

You will need the following ICT tools:

  • Internet search engines
  • email
  • facebook (or any other social network you deem appropriate)

Task 1- Use search engines to find out if a twinning partnership exists between your home town/city and one from another country

Task 2- Identify the person(s) in charge of this exchange twinning and get in contact so you can actively participate in the group’s activities

NB: If a twinning does not exist in your town, set out to find documentation -using search engines- on the process of setting up a town twinning e.g. http://www.twinning.org/en/page/enter-our-universe-of-twinning#.WOydYtLyvIV

Task 4- Discuss your ideas with interested parties to reinforce links between the (potential) twinned towns. You can get schools involved in joint activities like sport intervarsity competitions, set up festivals. For instance, a traditional Irish music and dance festival could take place in the twinned town in order to make an important part of the Irish culture known abroad. You can get ideas from your country’s tourism organisations for instance.

Task 5- Set up a dedicated facebook page to centralise all activities related to the town twinning. Other social media platforms can be used to relay all the relevant information (Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat etc.)

Task 6- Make a wish list of potential activities bearing in mind the various demographics you intend to involve (people of all ages, children activities, teenage-focused, university students, pensioners, special Olympics links etc.). Keep a precise log of all your ideas on a dedicated blog for instance.

Enjoy this learning (and human!) experience.
