University life in the target language country

This activity introduces you to university life in your mobility programme destination country.  Listen to the videos and follow the links to learn about the city, and to practice listening and viewing information in your target language.  You can extend this task by performing your own research on your mobility programme destination and sharing your findings on a class blog or forum thereby developing your participatory literacy skills.

Overview

The Mobility Programme is an intensive experience for students.  Gathering practical information before you go will make the transition easier for you, and being prepared will help you make the most of your limited time abroad.

This task introduces the university system in your target language country, so you will have a basic knowledge of what you can expect when studying abroad.

At the end of this activity, you will:

  • describe the different types of classes given at target language universities (lecture, seminar, tutorial, etc)
  • explain the practice of writing and presenting at target language universities.
  • demonstrate the use of university-related vocabulary as well as some socio-linguistic norms.

Procedure

  1. Click on the appropriate tab for your target language below.
  2. Follow the links to access videos, activities, and information.
  3. Further your knowledge by searching for other student experiences, tips on how you can prepare for the transition, information about the city you will be visiting, and how you can get the most out of your Mobility Programme experience
  4. Share the information on the class blog or online discussion boards.

Extend the activity

Carry out your own research on your mobility programme destination.  What search engines did you use?  How do results compare when you localised search engines (eg Google.ie and Google.fr)? How can you determine the credibility of these search results?

To learn more about transitioning to language learning environments.
