Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:

  • Decide which type of accommodation suits you best while abroad
  • Practise your listening skills so that you can understand spoken information about accommodation
  • Practise your written skills through interacting with peers via a forum, class blog, or social network

Technology required

Computer or mobile device, a headset/earphones. You will also need an account with a social network or personal blog, or access to an e-portfolio.

Instructions

Read the instructions below very carefully and select your target language tab at the bottom of this page to access the relevant resources.

  1. You will watch a video about student accommodation in your target language as many times as necessary while making a list of the following:
    • The parts of a building.
    • The services available at the accommodation.
    • The vocabulary that describes the room of a student.
  2. Think about the following questions:
    • What should your accommodation abroad look like? Why? Try to use as many terms as possible from the lists you compiled in 1).
    • What are the three most important aspects that a student must bear in mind when looking for accommodation? Why?
    • What is the best option in your opinion, to share a house with other students or to live in a hall of residence? Think of advantages and disadvantages and explain.
    • Imagine that you share your house with other students from different cultural backgrounds and that you must write “the norms for living together”. What would these norms be?
  3. Prepare a short post (200 words maximum in your target language) answering the above questions. Insert hyperlinks to relevant documents.
  4. Publish your post on your chosen platform.
  5. If you have published your post on a class blog, wiki, or forum, reply to at least one of your peers. Show agreement or disagreement, make suggestions, ask further questions, etc.
