Overview of Language Skills and Practices

The theme of Language Learning Strategies and Practices focuses on the acquisition of oral and other language skills:

  • intercultural competence
  • lexis and grammar
  • register and domains of use
  • use of digital resources including CALL resources.

The DigiLanguages team have curated and developed a range of resources to help you explore the area of digital literacy skills for language acquisition.  There are a number of self-directed activities that you can carry out in your own time, at your own pace.

Listening and ViewingListening and viewing are receptive skills and they refer to the ability to comprehend a message in the oral context. They refer to the ability to understand what we hear (sounds and words) and create meaning from it.
SpeakingSpeaking can be interactive (as in dialogues and discussions), partially interactive (as in lectures) or completely non-interactive (as in monologues or speeches). It is the ability of using the language to convey a message in the oral context.
Vocabulary, Grammar and SyntaxLearning a language includes, among other things, reflecting on the correct and proper use of words, grammar, orthography and punctuation to communicate ideas and information.
