Objectives
On completion of this activity, you will be able to:
- use some effective strategies in the classroom to assess the credibility and reliability of the information found online
Introduction
As seen previously (Information literacy, what is it?), you need to develop skills that will enable you to critically evaluate online sources of information, in your first language as well as the target language, whether for a college project or your personal use. You will find below a sample of resources, mostly designed by libraries. Clicking on the language tabs at the bottom of the page will give you access to similar resources in other languages.
Evaluation checklists
Study the documents below (don’t forget to have a look at the resources in other languages at the bottom of the page!) and make your own checklist. Use your checklist to evaluate a website of your choice, preferably in your target language.
In addition to your library resources, the following sites may be of interest to you:
- Kathy Schrock’s guide to everything provides many checklists and resources that can be used with different audiences. In particular, you may find The 5 W’s of Web Site Evaluation useful.
- The Berkeley Library guide to evaluating resources.
- 6 criteria for websites from Dalhousie University.
