Exploring new places with Google Maps

Google Maps offers many functions to help your students discover and prepare for your Mobility Programme destination.

For students studying in Ireland, logainm.ie is a rich resource that includes maps and information on Irish placenames in Irish and English.

There are links to and descriptions of important cultural locations and landmarks for the city, which can help enhance the understanding of tagging literacy and search literacies.

At the end of this activity learners should be able to:

  • Use the target language with increased oral and aural proficiency
  • Become familiar with important cultural and geographic landmarks
  • Prepare a visit to a target language country

There are a number of variations on this activity that could be based around this site. For example:

  1. Target Language:  You can view the maps in the target language, by switching the language in the menu bar on the menu in Google Maps.

  2. Directions: students can search from one main location to another (for example from the university to the train station)
  3. Accommodation:  help students find accommodation in the host destination.
  4. Arrival itinerary:  help students prepare their journey from their arrival to their accommodation.
  5. Landmarks:  learn about important cultural landmarks, possibly consider integrating this activity with a travel blog or WikiTravel activity.
